Almost any printing of Nada the Lily would garner 5 stars...but not this one. The copy from BiblioBazaar states, in the frontispiece, that "from time to time there are problems with the original book scan that may result in minor errors in the reproduction, including imperfections such as missing and blurred pages, poor pictures, markings and other reproduction issues beyond our control." The piece goes on to defend the policy by saying that they are providing a hard to find, perhaps otherwise out of print book and sometimes get them from open sources.
My complaints stem from the fact that the book is so filled with typos, missing words and the like that it is all but unreadable. When there are typos on every other page, I find myself anticipating the next "puzzle" instead of following the story. If you think I am overly sensitive, consider this the author's name is misspelled in half inch font on the front cover! If you attempt to verify that by the way, clicking on the cover picture here at will re-route you to a picture of the paperback's cover. In addition, I might have been more forgiving had I been told BEFORE I bought the book that it was filled with errors. But I was not.
By all means, buy and read (and re-read) Nada the Lily. Just don't buy it from BiblioBazaar.
So far, my favorite Haggard novel. The language, imagery and overall storytelling seems superior to the four or five other Haggard novels that I have read. The novel felt very representative of the style of the era, but at times it seemed to me that Haggard was really presenting some genuinely fresh writing.
Let Mr. Haggard take your mind on an African adventure with this book. The tale of Umslopagaas and Nada is one that is packed to the brim with action, romance, and intrigue. The author really paints a picture with his words, bringing all of Africa's beauty to life within your mind. I highly recommend reading this, and also Alan Quartermain and King Solomon's Mines. I am reading Alan's Wife next and can only dream that it will be as enjoyable as H Rider's other writings.
This novel features some characters from some of the Allan Quartermain stories. We have have Umslopogaas, a son of Chaka Zulu, who escaped death and grows up to hate his father. He falls in love with Nada the Lily. What makes this a Unique novel is all the Characters are black African's. The story weaves fiction with the real history of the Zulu nation. Chaka or Shaka was the man who united the Zulu's and changed the way war was waged among the African tribes. I liked the book because it told the story of the Zulu's from an African's point of view.
HR Haggard's brilliance really shines through with Nada the Lily. Don't let the name fool you, as Nada really doesn't show up that much. This is much more the story of Umslopogaas, a character from other HRH books. He's a Zulu warrior (with an interesting birth scene) who, along with his best friend the Wolf, carve a place in literature history. The action is furious, the deaths are many, and Mopo is a fabulous narrator.
I can't recommend this enough - and it's free as it's in the public domain. Grab this if you liked adventure stories.
This is another in H. Rider Haggard's African series, although this work does not directly involve Alan Quatermain, it nevertheless fills in the history of Umslopogaas of the People of the Ax, who figures materially in the Quatermain works for example "She and Alan". This work is a good read, having much similarity with the other Haggard African novels. There are lots of adventures and several dark villains as well, and the character development brings out that of Galazi, the Wolf, and Mopo, who assumed the role of Umslopogass's father. We also get a better insight into the characters of Chaka, the father of the Zulu's, and Dingaan. If the reader appreciates 19th century adventure novels, this one is sure to please.
This story-line is a narrative of one of the book's characters to a white man after the fact so to speak. Very interesting saga and history of African Zulu's and other faction tribes in the area and how war-like and absolutely sociopath crazy the Kings (mainly Chaka and Dingaan who were Zulu King's) and their warriors could be using fear to control the tribe people with their violent blood thirsty ways. Umslopogaas who has been in other books of Haggard and companion with Allan Quatermain, and Umslopogass being the main character and his background pre Quatermain loves Nada (aka Lily) threads the story-line. Bottom-line, a bloody saga of those African times which is still going on to this day but under different circumstances in our modern times, and not just in Africa.
